I was reading an article at Lifehack.org – 12 Tips to Improve the Quality of Your Free Time – and one of the questions asked was “Is your free time boring?”
My ears perked up, “well…yeah.” Yeah, indeed. Sometimes my free time is boring. WTF? Why on earth would that be??
I have decided that I will tear up a MTB trail, only to think ” nah, nevermind”. I decide that I will call someone but it is such a chore.
Then it dawned on me.
I keep trying to schedule my free time. No WONDER it’s boring. I feeling like I have to do something. I am convinced that is why watching tv is so ubiquitous. Nothing to plan. Nothing to think about. Something is on that you love, like, or can stand. You can do it immediately. It takes no advance preparation.
I have GOT to figure out a way to make stuff I like easy to do. Easy and non-plannable.
Since it’s New Year’s Resolution time, I resolve to NOT PLAN my free time. I, Hayden Tompkins, resolve NOT to plan my free time. I will not commit to anything. Maybe I’ll do it. Maybe I won’t. You’ll know when I know. It’ll be like Christmas all year long. A surprise for everyday.

Good points! It’s a fine line to walk when you want to “take advantage” of your free time by scheduling all your time, and just relaxing and having it be genuine free time. I suppose a balance of the two would be ideal. Thanks for the post.
